Practicing Citing Evidence with Theme

Lisa McDonald's fourth grade students use Padlet to respond to the question: What is theme? They then applied that knowledge to Frindle, as the main focus was to work in groups of 3 or 4, and find evidence from the text to support a possible theme for Andrew Clement's creative chapter book.

Students responded to the prompt using the "RACES" Format. Lisa scaffolded all by providing the restating, answering and explaining. Their job was to cite 2 pieces of evidence from the text and explain how each connected back to the theme. This is terrific practice as most students struggle with this task!

To ensure that all students participate, everyone had to cite one piece of evidence on a sticky note which served as their exit ticket for the assignment.

Great practice for the performance based assessment!
