Jacqueline Ferrara transformed her 6th grade classroom into an experience that allowed her students to understand what it was like to anxiously encounter the trials and tribulations of Ellis Island! Through this simulation, students studied and prepared to travel through the same steps that millions of immigrants took from the 1890s to the1950s.
In order to enter the room the students had to prepare their immigrant profile and passport. As they arrived they had to present their passport as a form of identification.
At the end of this activity students also tested their historical knowledge by taking the same exact citizenship test that present day immigrants take. This first hand experience provided real life awareness of the struggles and hardships during this difficult time.
All students were totally engaged with this real life, hands on opportunity!!
