Persuasion on a Grand Scale!

Fifth graders in Gabby Harwood's class had a large undertaking. They were asked to persuade Macy's to accept their newly designed balloon into the Macy's Day Parade on Thanksgiving Day. (See this hyperdoc for specific details.)

As the writing genre was persuasion, students had to form a well crafted paragraph that included: an effective opening, 3 reasons to support their opinion, and of course, an ending that provided a sense of closure.

Notice the diversity in the balloon designs and the effective persuasive writing!

Needless to say, I think all students took pride in their work and truly loved the assignment!

As the focus of the writing unit was to have students understand task, purpose and audience, I can't think of a more engaging, productive activity!
