Integrating Descriptive Writing Into Math!

What a truly amazing integration of descriptive writing and problem solving in mathematics! Students in Julia Carnevale's classroom creatively and effectively wrote multiplication problem using descriptive language and dialogue to engage their peers.

This was done through the Math Intervention Program run by RIDE. Rayna Ciano is the mastermind behind the program's implementation. As Julia's classroom has a diverse population of ELL and Special Education students, Rayna was able to qualify for a grant which offers training in the program.

Both Julia and Rayna decided to integrate the grade 3 writing unit into math and voila, the creation of a December Ebook was formed to show students' final products!

Below are examples of students creations. They used Book Creator to publish students' work. Click here to download the entire Ebook.

Love the effective use of dialogue!

What an engaging way to get students to create and solve real world problem!

Hats off to Julia, Rayna and these 3rd graders for collaboration, ingenuity and creativity!!!
