Into The Book, an online resource included in the Character Analysis and Writing Units of Study, is a terrific comprehension resource for elementary students and teachers. It focuses on eight research-based strategies, Using Prior Knowledge, Making Connections, Questioning, Visualizing, Inferring, Summarizing, Evaluating and Synthesizing. It provides online interactive activities and engaging 15-minute video programs.
This site is also including in the visualizing lessons connected to the writing units. April Marroquin (2nd grade teacher at Barnes) used it today to teach her students how to visualize, using some of the stories imbedded into the site. Please not that graphics are provided rather than having students hand drawing everything.
I highly recommend you use this as a visualizing center for your students. Please check out the other comprehension strategies that could also be incorporated into your ELA block.
This is what April did with her second graders. Needless to say, all were highly engaged!!!
