First Graders Meet Members of the Community

What a terrific culminating activity for the first grade students at Barnes Elementary School! Ms. Ramage, Mrs. Alviti and Mr. Kelly took students on a field trip to visit and interview the community members in Johnston. After students got to read about the various community members and their roles, they were able to visit them firsthand: The major, the police officers, the firemen and the librarian. Guaranteed to cement students' understanding of what they studied in the classroom!!

They got to see the mayor in action as they studied that Mayor Polisena is the leader of our town. As one parent put it, " I just love how the mayor has his arms folded and face scrunched. He appears to be listening so intensely to what the students are asking."

Chief Tamburini, from the Johnston Fire Department explained some of the tools that officers carry. Here he is showing the students his handcuffs.

This is a firefighter's view from the ladder, looking down.

  1. Awesome job providing your students a meaningful, multi-sensory learning experience in the real world. By taking the students into their community, you allowed them to access tools and the environment to support the academic concepts they have learned this year in your classroom. Keep up the fantastic work.
