Building a solid foundation is the key to success! That is exactly what Dina Needham and Kerri Yekelchik are doing in their second grade classroom. Students were exposed to the RACES graphic organizer for the first time, after reading the story "Dear Mr. Blueberry." They were asked to come up with a character trait for Emily after finding relevant evidence from the text.
They were then asked to explain the evidence they chose.
Notice the sentence stems and transition words that help to improve the sentence structure in each piece.
Imagine the foundation these students will have when they move on to 3rd grade!
Please share what you are doing in your classroom to help our students improve their written responses!
