"Babushka" comes to life in the second grade classrooms at at Thornton Elementary School! Students are completing an author study of Patricia Polacco and have come to realize the impact Patricia's grandmother (Babushka) had on her life, while reading many of the famous picture books she has written and illustrated. (Thank You Mr. Falker, My Rotten Red Headed Older Brother, etc.)

Babushka, aka Mrs. Stravato, reads Thunder Cakes to the children. |

Babushka with second grade teachers: Elena D'Arezzo, Lisa Filippelli, Heather Zanfagna and LIz O'brien |
As character traits were the focus of the unit, art was connected to reading while students made Babushka's face and identified traits that best describe her.
Students also identified character traits for Mrs. Stravato (aka, Babushka) as she is a monthly reader in the second grade classrooms.
What a terrific way to make reading come to life! These teachers truly know how to engage their students! Thank you for all that you do to enrich the lives of our children!
