Voice and Choice

Students in Mrs. Bishop's class understand what it means to have "Voice and Choice" when it comes to selecting their independent reading books in literacy class. Twice a week they read for an extended period of time using a book they selected from Mrs. Bishop's extensive classroom library.

Students are then asked to respond to text by writing a letter to Mrs. Bishop discussing the book. They can write a summary, their favorite character, what they noticed, anything they are confused about, etc.
See sample below.

Her next goal is to conference with each student individually so she can get a snapshot of their comprehension needs. This is a great example of an effective Writers Workshop Model in action!
